Yoga

A group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India.

History & Origins

The origins of Yoga have been speculated to date back to pre-Vedic Indian traditions; it is mentioned in the Rigveda. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (c. 400 CE) systemized the practice into the 'Eight Limbs,' covering ethics, posture, breath, and meditation.
Historically, Yoga was a meditative discipline aimed at isolating consciousness (Purusha) from matter (Prakriti). The physical postures (Asanas) were originally just one small part designed to prepare the body for long periods of sitting.
In the late 19th and 20th centuries, yoga gurus introduced the practice to the West, where it evolved into a postural exercise system while retaining elements of breathwork (Pranayama) and concentration (Dharana).

Influence on Modern Mindfulness

Yoga introduced somatic awareness to the West. Techniques like Trataka (gazing) and Pranayama (breath control) form the basis of many modern 'bottom-up' regulation therapies that work with the body to calm the mind.
