Tonglen
Overview
Tonglen meditation is a profound Tibetan Buddhist practice for cultivating boundless compassion and transforming suffering. Often referred to as "giving and receiving," this powerful mindfulness technique invites practitioners to courageously breathe in the pain, fear, and hardship of themselves and others, fully embracing the suffering with an open heart. With each exhalation, the meditator then breathes out peace, healing, joy, and loving-kindness, sending relief and comfort to all beings who suffer. This empathetic exchange is a radical form of compassion practice, fostering a deep sense of interconnection and altruism by directly engaging with the difficult aspects of existence. By consciously absorbing negativity and projecting positive energy, Tonglen helps to dissolve self-centeredness, develop profound empathy, and purify one's own mental and emotional states. It stands as an accessible yet deeply transformative pathway to expand the heart, bringing light and liberation to both the giver and the receiver within a dedicated mindfulness journey.
