MBSR
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: The secular clinical program that brought mindfulness to Western medicine.
History & Origins
Developed in 1979 by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, MBSR was created to help patients suffering from chronic pain and stress-related disorders who were not responding to traditional treatments.
Kabat-Zinn removed the religious framework of Buddhism but kept the core practices of Vipassana (insight) and Yoga. He framed it as an 'attention training' protocol using scientific language.
The 8-week program became the gold standard for mindfulness research, proving that meditation could measurably reduce cortisol, lower blood pressure, and improve immune response.
Influence on Modern Mindfulness
MBSR validated mindfulness in the eyes of the medical community. It paved the way for mindfulness in hospitals, schools, and corporate wellness programs worldwide.
